The Asociación Recreativa Nacional de Bridge de Costa Rica, the “ARNB”, is a non-profit association whose principal objectives are the development of Bridge in Costa Rica and its enjoyment as a recreational and social activity as well as a competitive sport.
The major center for bridge in Costa Rica is in San José, where the ARNB maintains its playing facility, the Bridge House (click for map). It is located on Sabana Sur, 200 meters west of Pops Sabana, opposite Licorera Las Brujas which has a prominent sign. Parking is available along the long beige wall immediately in front of the Bridge House.
Information about games and special events can viewed on the Calendar page.
The ARNB awards Master Points to the top-placing members in sanctioned games.
The ARNB is officially recognized by the World Bridge Federation (WBF) and also by Zone 5 of the WBF, the Central American and Caribbean Bridge Federation (CACBF). In both cases, it is recognized as the National Bridge Organization (NBO) for Costa Rica. This means the ARNB has the responsibility for duplicate games that have international sanction and for selecting players to represent Costa Rica in zonal and international competition.
The “rules” of bridge are embodied in The Laws of Contract Duplicate Bridge a document maintained by the WBF. A revised version of the “Laws” was promulgated by the WBF at the World Championships in Shanghai. Those will go into effect this year (by September). NBOs are not allowed to make regulations that conflict with the “Laws”
As the National Bridge Association, the ARNB establishes the “Conditions of Contest” and regulations (such as those for alerting and the use of bidding boxes) for bridge competitions in Costa Rica. In general, the ARNB uses, more or less, those established by the CACBF.
